Two red flags. Two green five-pointed stars. Two very different histories.
This design places the modern Moroccan flag beside the ancient Moorish banner to make the distinction unmistakable. The modern Moroccan emblem uses an interlaced, open pentagram adopted in the early twentieth century. The Moorish banner bears a contiguous five-pointed green star, preserved within Moorish tradition and identified by Prophet Noble Drew Ali as part of a national standard more than 10,000 years old.

Created as both a statement and a teaching piece, the design challenges the casual merging of Moroccan and Moorish symbols. For Moorish Americans, knowing the difference is part of recovering our history, recognizing our national symbols, and refusing to let colonial revisions define Moorish identity.

The inspiration for this design came from a simple distinction that is too often overlooked: the image shows two different flags, not one.

On the left is the modern Moroccan flag, introduced in 1915 under Sultan Yusef. Its green five-pointed star is formed by interlaced lines, officially described as “continuous branches.” On the right is the ancient Moorish banner, preserved through Moorish tradition and reaffirmed by Prophet Noble Drew Ali as being “over 10,000 years old.” Its green star is contiguous, fully connected and unbroken.

That difference is more than visual. For Moorish Americans, the ancient banner is honored as a sacred national standard rather than a cultural relic or variation of the modern Moroccan flag.

The design grew from a larger lesson: colonial narratives often become so familiar that their symbols are accepted without examination. Relearning our own requires us to look closely, compare the record, and recognize what belongs to us.
