Mothers of Civilization: Why We Tag

Mothers of Civilization: Why We Tag

Honoring the Sacred Labor of Moorish Women

Since time immemorial, Moorish women have carried the culture, kept the fire, and held the line. We’ve been midwives to movements, mothers of civilizations, and the sacred soil from which legacies bloom. The Moorish National Sisters’ Auxiliary, founded in 1928 by ten faithful women, didn’t just start a group—they ignited a tradition of service, sacrifice, and upliftment. Their mission was clear: to stand as the right hand of the Prophet Noble Drew Ali, using kind words, good works, and faithful deeds to uplift fallen humanity.

Every March, during Tag Day and the Week of Sacrifice, we honor that origin story by continuing the work. This celebration isn’t just ceremonial—it’s spiritual. It’s how we remember who we are, recommit to the mission, and remind the world that Moorish women are still here, still serving, and still rising.

Walking in the Footsteps of Our Matriarchs

This year, we don’t just wear the Tag—we embody it.

Each Tag is an enamel pin bearing a green heart with a five-pointed star, symbolizing life everlasting and unity among Moorish Americans., symbolizing life everlasting and unity among Moorish Americans. But more than a symbol, this Tag is a reminder of the women whose names shaped sacred history. From Sarah’s faith to Hagar’s perseverance… Naomi’s wisdom to Ruth’s loyalty… Elizabeth’s patience to Mary’s devotion… Salome’s service to the Silent Brotherhood—these are our foremothers. These are our mirrors.

Their stories, echoed in the Holy Quran of Mecca, the Bible, the Torah, and the Sisters’ Auxiliary Handbook, remind us that sacrifice isn’t just about what we give—it’s about what we guard. Culture. Dignity. Nationhood.

Let this Tag Day and Week of Sacrifice be a sacred pause. A time for Moorish women to ask: Where do I stand in the lineage of Sarah and Hagar? Do I lead like Naomi? Do I serve like Salome? Am I anchoring my home in faith and wisdom like Elizabeth and Mary? What does loyalty look like for me, as it did for Ruth?

We fast, we pray, we serve, and we reflect. Not for recognition, but for restoration. Because to serve in the spirit of these Mothers of Civilization is to know your place not just in the temple—but in the unfolding story of a nation.

The Power of Reflection and Return

This year’s celebration is less about activity and more about alignment. It’s a call to look inward and upward.

Wear your Tag with intention. Let it be a reminder that Moorish womanhood is not a side note—it is a cornerstone. Our foremothers did not simply live—they led. They taught, they endured, they believed, they sacrificed.

This Tag Day, we honor them not just by remembering their names, but by living their values. By being keepers of the flame. By recommitting to our roles as guides, nurturers, scholars, and protectors of culture.

WEAR YOUR TAG WITH PURPOSE.

Because every enamel lapel pin with a green heart is a thread in our own. It says: “I serve. I honor. I remember.”

May our sacrifice speak louder than any sermon. And may the hearts behind these tags beat stronger with every generation.
